High business rates hurting our high streets

“Farewell Peter the butcher” – below is my latest letter to the Islington Tribune:

It is sad to see that high rents and competition from supermarkets have forced the Caledonian Road’s last community butcher to close (Final cut as Cally loses last traditional butcher, September 13).

“Pete the butcher” was a firm favourite in the Perry household. He sold interesting cuts of meat that were good value and much tastier than stuff you get in the supermarket.

The recent horsemeat scandal highlighted the need for quality butchers the community can trust. It is time for the Tory-Lib Dem government to cut business rates that are holding back our high streets.

I wish the Cally’s favourite butcher all the best for his retirement.
